Research Fraud in the Behavioral and Biomedical Sciences by David J. Miller,

Research Fraud in the Behavioral and Biomedical Sciences by David J. Miller,
While there is currently no official consensus as to the extent of fraud or misrepresentation in the sciences, recent estimates suggest that they may occur in as much as 12% of all scientific research conducted in North America. In an age dominated philosophically by the overarching ideal of scientific truth, and in which science plays a central role in virtually every aspect of life, research fraud, in even the minutest degree, can have only dire and far-reaching implications. Nowhere is the seriousness of scientific fraud more evident than in the behavioral and biomedical sciences--those disciplines that have the most obvious and immediate impact upon the physical and psychological health and well-being of both the individual and society. Yet, traditionally, students and practitioners in those fields have received, at best, minimal exposure to the ethical issues involved in the research endeavor. This book seeks to rectify that situation. Research Fraud in the Behavioral and Biomedical Sciences brings together contributions by specialists in psychology, medicine, law, and philosophy. Over the course of twelve chapters, those specialists treat topics as diverse as the history of research fraud, the moral and ethical philosophical aspects of empirical science, the legal ramifications of fraud, the psychology of people who commit fraud and the institutional and career pressures (publish or perish, etc.) that often compel them to do so, and the influence of the review process used by professional journals and review boards. Also included are several chapters covering recent case histories of alleged fraud in biomedical and social science research. In the final chapters of Research FraudIn the Behavioral and Biomedical Sciences, the editors explore, in great detail, options for future prevention of research fraud.

Essentials of Writing Biomedical Research Papers by Mimi Zeiger,
Essentials of Writing Biomedical Research Papers by Mimi Zeiger,
An engaging and effective nuts-and-bolts approach to scientific writing. ."..outstanding for its approach to the logic of presenting scientific work." - British Medical Journal review of first edition. Now revised and updated, this straightforward guide to biomedical writing helps authors understand both what a well-written scientific research paper is and how to create such a work. Essentials of Writing Biomedical Research Papers, Second Edition, provides writers with specific, clear guidelines on word choice, sentence structure, and paragraph structure. In addition, it explains how to construct each section of a research paper, so that, ultimately, the paper as a whole tells a clear story and sends a clear message.New to This Edition!New examples from the current literature, including many involving molecular biology; Expanded exercises at the end of the book; Revised explanations on linking key terms, transitions clauses, uses of subheads, and emphases. The specific principles of effective biomedical writing are presented and explained, and then summarized in handy chapter checklists. Each section of the prototypical biomedical research paper is then systematically analyzed in terms of its function, content, organization, detail, and length. This section-by-section analysis covers the following: the introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion, figures and tables, references, abstract, and title. Of special note: The book contains a full-length paper for readers to evaluate and revise in accordance with the book; book's principles and guidelines. Also from McGraw-Hill...Gehlbach: Interpreting the Medical Literature; Glantz: Primer of Biostatics Books and Software; Friedman:Primer of Epidemiology.

Biomedical research - Biomedical research involves thorough investigation of any matter related to the domain of living or biological systems. Usually biomedical denotes a greater stress on problems related to human health and diseases.

Biomedical Primate Research Centre - The Biomedical Primate Research Centre (BPRC) is Europe's largest primate research centre, using great apes and monkeys in animal testing and vivisection. It is located in Rijswijk, (Zuid-Holland) and employs about 100 people.

Seattle Biomedical Research Institute/Temp - Seattle Biomedical Research Institute, SBRI for short, is a non-profit biotech research center located in the South Lake Union area of Seattle, Washington. They focus on a variety of infectious diseases, such as HIV/AIDS, Chagas disease, Malaria and tuberculosis.

Biomedical Informatics Research Network - The Biomedical informatics Research Network or BIRN is a National Institutes of Health initiative providing a framework of people and information technology infrastructure — notably a grid of supercomputers — for distributed collaborations in biomedical science.
